Unified Submittal Descriptions were implemented by NASA and Navy in October, 1999, and by Army in October, 2000. The formatting is as follows:
The Submittal Article must be in PART 1 and entitled 1.x SUBMITTALS (with x representing any number).
Submittal Items are inserted below the Submittal Descriptions (SD numbers and names) and are surrounded with a set of Submittal tags within a set of Item tags <ITM>.
Submittal Items that appear in Submittal tags below the SD numbers should be used in only one principal subpart within the technical Section, either as an Article, Paragraph, Subparagraph, or within the text.
Submittal Items that appear in Submittal tags below the SD numbers should be consistent with tagged Submittal items referenced in the Section text. They are not case sensitive.
Submittal Classifications are only referenced in the Submittal Article.
Insert the Submittal Classification G when Government approval is required for a Submittal Item. Add the G in a set of Submittal tags following any added or existing Submittal Items requiring Government approval. The G is nested in the same set of Item tags <ITM> as the Submittal items.
Inserted a semi-colon and one space following the Submittal Item and before the Classification.

When Submittal Items are not designated by a G, and the FIO (For Information Only) is required in the (f) column of the Submittal Register, you must do the following:
From the Job Properties | General tab, change the Submittal Register Format button to Army and check the Unified Submittal Description box.
ClickOK.
The Submittal Register will now be printed with FIO in column (f).
The Reviewer is only referenced in the Submittal Article.
Following the Classification G (for Government approval) and a separator using one of the following: one space, a comma, a pipe symbol (|)or a dash (-),a Reviewer can be designated by inserting up to five (5) characters (such as A/E forArchitectural Engineer). Example: G ROICC
The Classification and the Reviewer are surrounded by a set of Submittal tags following the Submittal item. The Submittal item, Classification and Reviewer are nested in the same a set of Item tags <ITM>.
