A total of five or six alpha/numeric characters, beginning with a two-digit Division number.  The sixth character represents the agency (refer to chart below).  Once the Section has been reviewed by all agencies and unified, the sixth character is then removed.  The agency responsible for maintaining the Section is then noted in the Section's banner as the Preparing Activity.

When renaming a MasterFormat1995 Section number to a MasterFormat 2004 Section number you are given three choices:

  1. Three Levels (e.g., 09 01 90) -- 6 digits (8 characters)

  2. Four Levels (e.g., 09 01 90.51) -- 8 digits (11 characters)

  3. Five Levels (e.g., 09 01 90.51 20) -- 10 digits (14 characters)
