Cartier Parish Manager St. Tammany Parish Police Jury Post Office Box 628 Covington, Louisiana 70434 Re: Renovations to 5th Floor & Add Elevator St. Tammany Parish Office Building Slidell, LA Gemtlemen: While on a tour of the 5th floor and examining the 6th floor for storage areas, I noticed that one area on the 6th floor is being used to store paper products such as boxes of computer and reproduction paper, etc. I feel that I must alert you to the problems involved with storing paper on floors above the ground level. Paper generally weighs 80 to 90 pounds per cubic foot, thus a stack of boxes filled with paper (the type of paper use in reproduction machines) can easily overload a floor designed for approximately 50 to 60 pounds per square foot live load. It would be far better to store the paper in several different areas than to stack many boxes in the same room. This is not a problem unique to any one building, but is true of all floors that are not specifically designed to carry loads imposed by paper and other heavy storage. Sincerely, Emmett G.(Pete) Dammon, P.E. Chief Engineer EGD:msd
