You can select  text using the following keystrokes:

Shift+Right Arrow one character at a time, to the right of the cursor

Shift+Left Arrow one character at a time, to the left of the cursor

Shift+Ctrl+Right Arrow one word at a time, to the right of the cursor

Shift+Ctrl+Left Arrow one word at a time, to the left of the cursor

Shift+End all text to the right of the cursor, through end of line

Shift+Home all text to the left of the cursor, through beginning of line

Shift+Down Arrow one line at a time, moving down

Shift+Up Arrow one line at a time, moving up

Shift+Page Down one page at a time, moving down

Shift+Page Up one page at a time, moving up

Shift+Ctrl+End down through the end of the file

Shift+Ctrl+Home up through the beginning of the file
