Designer Dick Whittington, ASID, devised a solution that is
an object lesson in making the most of a small space. Envisioning a butler's pantry in a
gracious old home, he proceeded to demonstrate that it's still a good idea. While some
would be quick to point out that typical 20th century homes aren't likely to have a Jeeves
or Hudson lurking discreetly out of sight, anyone who entertains will value the
convenience of a "staging area" strategically located between the kitchen and
entertaining areas.
Whittington's design provides attractive open and concealed storage units with ready
access to wine, glassware and other paraphernalia used primarily for entertaining. |
He created a warm and inviting space with handsome whitewashed oak
cabinetry that stands out against vibrant salmon-colored walls. A deep shade of salmon
covers the trim moldings and shutters, highlighting these details without overpowering the
small space. He equipped it with an apron-front sink which is an authentic fixture in real
butlers' pantries. It is handy for post-party cleanup, located right where glassware and
serving pieces are stored. A carved front lends an elegant touch to this sink, which is
set in a practical ceramic countertop, with matching carved tiles as accents.
A smaller entertainment sink is equipped with a gooseneck faucet for beverage service.
Brass faucets with antique styling details and a shaded brass wall sconce lend an air of
tradition to the room, while the terra cotta tile creates a durable low-maintenance floor.
