Crisp mountain mornings. Tree branches still covered with winter’s frost. Veils of steam rising from hot water springs. All are vivid recollections of a November camping trip to Washington state's Olympic Peninsula for designer Jan Bernson--and the inspiration for her bathroom. Bernson's interpretation of her experience is obtained through the use of a variety of elements and techniques. Stone tiles represent the mountain paths. Frosted windows are reminiscent of the steam rising from the springs and the iced waterfalls, while the planters provide the lacy mountain foliage.

The room is a study of the contrasts between soft and hard, angles and curves, dark and light. The soft curves of the plumbing fixtures tend to counter the look and feel conveyed by the extensive use of stone and the crisp lines of the chrome faucets. The sharp angle of the planters and the steps to the bathing area are softened by foliage and bone-colored, suede-like wallcovering. The black fixtures pop out of the light stone. The minimal use of color keeps the entire design very natural.

A small space like this one provides limitations and challenges. The interest in a successful design then comes from use of angles, curves and different elevations.

Recessed lighting provides illumination over the mirrored lavatory and toilet areas. Frosted wall sconces offer a softer, more relaxing light for the elevated bathing area.

Jan Bernson, ASID, has provided commercial and custom furnishing design service for clients including banks, offices, showrooms, and hotel and meeting room facilities, as well as private residences She is a graduate of Central Michigan University and Harrington Institute of Interior Design.
