Studies indicate color is the first thing children respond to in a learning situation. That being the case, this lively bathroom created with vivid primary colors by Cheryl Janz, ASID, is sure to capture their attention. She used the colors and shapes found in the whimsical fish mosaic floor tile as the basis for the room's decor. The fish motif carries through to the tiled backsplash, shower curtain and accessories. A mirrored measuring stick on one wall adds another touch of whimsy while other features in the space meet the "growing needs" of those who use the room. A pull-out step offers little ones access to the standard height countertop and medicine cabinet. The single-control, lever handle faucet is easy to operate, even with soapy hands.

The bright blue toilet seat features molded handholds and a smaller opening than conventional toilet seats while the bath/shower module offers a height-adjustable handshower. Recessed shelving and pegs for towels are placed within easy reach.

Overhead halogen lighting provides abundant illumination for bathing and grooming activities. Additionally, incandescent lighting on the mirrored vanity wall helps balance color. Walls are covered with a vibrant yellow coat of washable paint. The undercounter lavatory set in a solid surface countertop with a red accent inlay provides a clean look and easy clean-up.

Her work, which centers around color as a key design element, has appeared in Midwest Living, and Better Homes & Gardens Home Plan Ideas. Janz holds a degree in interior design from Michigan State University.
