The well-being of the body, mind, and spirit so vital to the Japanese culture provided the catalyst for Patricia Algiers, ASID, as she created this room. It offers a retreat where you can pamper yourself. Central to the Japanese bath concept is the physical separation of the bath from the rest of the room. Algiers approached this philosophy by creating two distinctly diverse, functional spaces that allow two people to use the room simultaneously. The first area is an isolated sanctuary where a person can relax. At its center is the whirlpool bath, surrounded and further defined by tumbled marble. A space for personal hygiene which included the toilet and lavatory, the second area is defined by bleached ash flooring. The polished brass lavatory faucet and accessories contrast the subtleties of the Japanese design. A natural, neutral color palette and wonderfully textured tile contribute to an authentic Japanese atmosphere. To enhance this ambiance, a shoji screen partition suggests a meditation garden beyond the room. Indirect and reflective light, an essential concept in Japanese decor, yields shadows that furnish depth and complete the rooms character. Recessed niches bearing pieces of authentic Japanese artwork also provide interesting storage compartments for accessories. About the Designer PRODUCT/SOURCE LIST Kohler Co.
