The design concept for this dressing room was born out of
the basic forms that dominate our surroundings. Simple geometric lines form the foundation
for the room’s contemporary decor while the use of natural materials throughout adds
a classic flavor. The above-counter lavatory provides a striking focal point; its textural
glaze has the stunning appearance of igneous rock. Supported by polished chrome spheres,
a clear glass vanity appears to float above the birds-eye maple cabinets. The cabinets
also seem to be suspended in space as the pyramid-shaped legs are recessed with lighting
underneath. Walls of natural limestone with a tile border repeating geometric shapes add a
classic architectural feel. On the floor, triangular and square metal deco tiles reside
harmoniously. The ceiling features a fabric-covered trapezoid which visually joins
bird’s-eye maple soffits. |
Blurring the boundaries of reality, a trompe l’oeil mural gives the
illusion of a verandah extending from the room. Mirrored cabinets, mounted at different
depths, add to the mirage that the room is larger than it really is.
About the Designer
Vonda Myers Tomlinson, ASID, practices interior design in Kohler, Wisconsin,
where she is supervisor of interior design for Kohler Co. In her role, she has been
involved in designing office, retail and hospitality spaces. Tomlinson has held numerous
board positions with the Wisconsin Chapter of ASID, including the office of president. She
has received several ASID Presidential Citations for her active design involvement and
hold professional memberships with both the International Facility Management Association
and Historic Preservation Society.
