The countryside of southern France, distinguished by its natural expanse of earth, sky, animals and trees, moves indoors with this unique bathroom created by Jean Sedor, ASID. The color palette is based on the warm shade of chamois, and it is accented with shades of deep green, russet and wheat. The natural feeling created in this space can make one feel as though they are outdoors. Many of the bathroom's design elements are based on the unique fabric used to upholster the walls. It is adapted from a museum print which featured colorful images of animals, birds and trees. Cording, in a deep shade of chamois, is used as a fabric border in the corners and along the ceiling of the room. According to Sedor, upholstered walls are common in the south of France to cover cracked walls in old buildings and to control the acoustics of very spacious rooms.

The floor is covered in wheat-colored tile accented with small green tile insets. A bookcase glazed with a faux finish is situated opposite the lavatory and toilet. Only about six inches deep, the bookcase actually adds depth to the room and makes it seem larger.

Hand-colored nature lithographs framed in bird's-eye maple decorate the wall above the whirlpool bath.

A dome ceiling painted in a sky motif and surrounded with small lights washes the room in a soft glow. Light also radiates from recessed lighting above the whirlpool and a custom-designed brass chandelier with green leaves and russet accents. Wall sconces which match the chandelier flank the antique brass mirror.

About the Designer
Jean Sedor, ASID, is principal of Jean Sedor Designs in Janesville, Wisconsin. Her firm does residential and commercial design. Her major project experience includes the design of the CUNA Mutual Insurance Company in Madison, Wisconsin, and the Dodge County Legal Services Building, for which she was presented the Wisconsin Society of Architects Award. An interior design graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Sedor is a past president of the Wisconsin chapter of the American Society of Interior Design.
